Kane wins WWE Money in the Bank, cashes in to win the World Heavyweight Championship

In a prior post, I was asked if Kane would ever win a world title again. No, I said. Although he’s a good character and plays his role well, I said Kane was probably too old and past his prime to hold a major championship.

Apparently I was wrong. Not only did Kane win Smackdown’s Money in the Bank ladder match tonight at WWE’s pay-per-view of the same name, but he eventually cashed it in to win the World Championship from Rey Mysterio after Mysterio had beaten Jack Swagger.

If there was ever a time for Kane to be the World Champion, now is the time. I said before when I reviewed the Kane DVD that the story of Kane and his brother the Undertaker has always been my favorite story of wrestling lore. With Kane on a warpath to seek out who put Undertaker in a vegetative state, there is new fire in the Big Red Machine and I’m all for it.

This is a great opportunity for Kane and it’s probably going to end up leading to a match with the Undertaker down the line. I don’t think the two have ever faced each other in Hell in a Cell, and that would be fantastic if WWE does that show again this year.

If that rumored match is true, I’m sure they are building up the send-off of both Kane and the Undertaker, who are both probably nearing the end of their respective careers. What a circle that would be – Kane’s debut in the WWF destroying the Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell, and them having their final feud blow off in the same structure 13 years later.

I’m immensely happy that Kane has this reward right now for his years of hard work in the WWE. I hope he gets to have a successful run with the title this time, as his last WWF title reign in 1998 was cut short when he vacated the title on RAW the next night. Honestly, I thought Kane was going to have his final title reign when he was the ECW champion, but again I was proved wrong.

As for other notes from Money in the Bank, in case this is your first stop: The Miz won the RAW briefcase; Sheamus, The Hart Dynasty, Alicia Fox, and Layla all retained their titles

What are your thoughts on Kane as the WWE Champion?
