WWE dropped the ball with Jack Swagger as World Champion

At last night’s WWE Fatal 4 Way pay-per-view, World Champion Jack Swagger lost the title to Rey Mysterio in a match that also included the Big Show and CM Punk. According to Steve Gerweck at Gerweck.net, Rey won the title because WWE was unhappy with Swagger as their champion.

All I can say is that WWE dropped the ball with Jack Swagger as their world heavyweight champion because of his ability and the heat garnered from the fans. If the report is true, they have nobody but themselves to blame for what was Swagger’s title reign.

I made a pretty strong case for Jack Swagger almost a month into his title reign. Swagger had strong wins over both Chris Jericho (who he won the title from) and Edge, who has been undeniably a top star over the past four or five years. But Swagger lost cleanly to John Morrison and the Undertaker, two superstars who could’ve helped solidify his status as the champion.

Swagger’s clean losses to continued, twice to Rey Mysterio on SmackDown. It seemed like every week, somebody would get the better of Swagger. The only major wins after beating Jericho and Edge were the ones he got at Extreme Rules against Randy Orton, and at Over the Limit against the Big Show. However, for fans (like myself) that don’t buy the pay-per-views, we only get to see the World champion on TV. And when that World champion loses every single match, we don’t think he’s much of a champion.

That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t have not wanted to pay to see Swagger get his head torn off. His promos were fantastic. Swagger talks about various achievements he’s gotten throughout his career and makes the fans feel as though they can never accomplish what he has. He also talks a lot about lessons his daddy taught him. I was able to watch SmackDown a few times during these segments, and the fans HATED what he had to say.

Jack Swagger is a good wrestler and a good promo. If anybody think he’s any less of a promo because of his “speech impediment,” they are not true wrestling fans. Dusty Rhodes got over in the 70s and 80s and nobody ever made fun of his lisp, that I know of. In fact, I even joked on a wrestling forum I belong to that Dusty would be revealed as the biological father of Jack Swagger, much to Swagger’s surprise.

I really wish WWE would have kept the strap on Swagger. I didn’t want to make this such an anti-Mysterio blog as much as a pro-Swagger blog. My Mysterio rant can be saved for another day.

For now, all I can say is that WWE should be unhappy with themselves for their portrayal of the “two-time, two-time All-American American” and shouldn’t take that resentment out against Swagger.

Still quiet here.sas
